Which one do you need? In order to know what cabinet you should purchase it is important to know what each one offers. Failure to pick the right “housing unit” for sensitive or even heat-generating equipment can lead to huge losses in both data and money.
Server Rack Cabinets
Server Rack Cabinets are commonly used for server installations as well as to house UPSes and monitors as well as other similar equipment. Server Rack Cabinets are 19 inches wide by industry standards, with the 23 inch wide slots for servers growing at a steady rate. They are typically 24 inches in width and 36 inches in depth.
Other customised configurations exist and are offered by hardware providers to meet the specific needs of customers. Server Rack Cabinets come with front and rear doors that allow air to flow to cool the installed equipment that a continuous amount of heat.
It is good to note that among data centres, there is currently a move to migrate to standard 42U units with an increased height – 48U to 51U or even higher. The extra space increases ventilation and allows more storage for wiring and the like.
Network Cabinets
Network Cabinets are common used to house routers, switches, patch panels and other similar networking equipment. Network Cabinets go 31 inches in depth, sometimes less. They are shallower than Server Rack Cabinets. Instead of the “ventilated” doors of Server Rack Cabinets, the doors of Network Cabinets often come in glass or plexiglass.
