A power distribution unit is a device used in datacenters to distribute AC power to several server, switches and routers. PDUs ranges from simple 120V power strips to units that breaks out 120Volts from 240V. Advanced features are remotely managed through a web browser or SNMP management protocol or other management console making outlet to be turned on and off at the desired times and in a proper sequence for powering or shutting down equipment.
Distinction between Basic and Smart PDUs
A basic PDU is dependable, cost effective, space saving way to deliver power to wiring server rooms, wiring closets and equipment rack from a UPS system utility or generator outlet. It complements the advantages of a UPS by adding more outlets than are essentially provided by a UPS and converts a single high amperage to multiple low amperage power distribution unit outlets. Basic PDU is the easiest way to distribute facility generator or UPS power to multiple rack loads.
Smart UPS can be broken down into three categories.
Metered PDU: A metered PDU can monitor load level locally and prevent any potential overloads with an inbuilt digital current meter at the same time offering reliable, multi-outlet, rackmount, single or three-phase, PDU from any protected generator, UPS or mains input power source.
Monitored PDU: It is similar to metered PDU. Howbeit, it goes a step further by its capacity to monitor single or three phase voltage remotely, load, and frequency levels in real time through an inbuilt network connection. The output consumption of current is locally displayed through a visual meter to warn of any potential overloads before they reach critical levels.
Connecting additional equipment to a power distribution unit can overload it causing the equipment to fail or the breakers to trip. Both monitored and metered PDU display load levels in real time, thus allowing additional equipment to be safely connected. The basic input plugs into an On-Line Uninterrupted Power Supply system. The secondary input will then plugs into the wall outlet. If UPS is taken offline for replacement, repair or maintenance, the PDU keeps the load powered by switching automatically from the primary to secondary input as a result of its ATS functionality.
Switched PDU: Switched PDU can be used when you want to connect or disconnect data center load or the ability to monitor remotely. It has an inbuilt digital current meter and a remote controller on the individual outlets for custom power on and off, rebooting locked equipment and load shedding of non essential when a power blackout occurs to extend battery runtime for critical equipment. Unused Power Distribution Unit can be locked off electronically to prevent the connection of unauthorized hardware. Built in digital display and remote network/web interface reports detailed voltage, kilowatt and amperage output values per breaker phase/bank with additional reporting options for optional sensor and IP address, power unbalance percentage and humidity data. The power distribution power interface connects to an Ethernet jack where remote users can switch each of the PDU outlets on or off through SNMP, telnet or web.
Therefore, intelligent Power Distribution Unit offers diverse advanced features that make it easier to increase uptime and reduce costs of operations.
LED are recyclable and environmentally friendly. They have low power consumption and ha e a long lifetime. They don’t contain hazardous substances, for instance, mercury as a compact fluorescent lamp do. I will present four environmentally friendly luminaire components.
LED chip – This emitting light diode-a light source that becomes illuminated by the movement of electrons or current passing through a semiconductor. A semiconductor is a solid chemical compound that conducts electricity under some conditions making it an ideal medium to control the current.
Solid State Lighting (SSL) – It uses LED since it is a solid state lighting, it does not need a heated filament, like an incandescent bulb. LED light form when P-Type (+) and N-Type (-) semiconductor that form PN junction meets and form light.
An LED driver – It regulate the current that flows through LED similar to a ballast in compact fluorescent lights. It can be external or internal. LED output is proportional to current; any variation in the current can cause unacceptable changes in light output. LED driver is a key component and impacts the lamp life of the LED.
The heat sink: LEDs do not generate much ambient heat externally but do generate internal heat within the junction. High temperature in the junction affect long and short term life affect the LED performance. Heat is removed from LED chip to maintain the expected light output.
LED
LED is a semiconductor that gives off light when electric current passes through it. LED are composed of two resources that are retained in connection with one another when the electricity is smeared to the diode. LED on the other hand are smaller compared to other lamp bulbs and infact, they consume less energy. They consume 90% less energy compared to incandescent lighting. However, LEDs are a type of technology that is so much versatile.
Components of LED
In order to give details how an LED functions, it is very important that we should first explain its components.
Post and Anvil: LEDs have two lead used for supplying input voltage. They are known as posts (positive0 and longer lead and Anvil (negative) and smaller lead. The Anvil and post regulate polarization of the two. On the other hand, the Anvil is used to physically hold the chip and offers heat sinking and directivity to the released light.
Semiconductor Die: It is a small block of semiconducting materials wherein a given ideal circuit is made-up. In fact, it is considered as the core of electronic devices and consists of various integrated circuits.
Reflective Cavity: Light extraction in LED is one of the most imperative aspects. The main purpose is to make light brighter by converging its light into one point.
Epoxy Lens or Case: It has three important functions
- Designed to let light to outflow from the semiconductor
- Focuses the light
- Safeguards the LED semiconductor against outside elements
Functionality
LED functionality is different from incandescent technology. Incandescent lamps develop their light by warming the tungsten filament while the LED develops the light through electroluminescence sensation. It is a common phenomenon that derives light when current passes over it. The scenario takes as soon as electrons are sent over. Electron holes occur when the atom does not have enough electrons. Nevertheless, the number of electron holes are controlled and created by fixing germanium and silicon.
LEDs functionality Breakdown
Before light was emanated, the electrical energy pass over the LED driver before anything else. The diode becomes special for semiconductor glows when electric energy is passed over it. Light can be developed from LEDs. Howbeit, when the electrical energy pass through diode, LED give off the light which passes over a phosphorous covering to enhance the quality of light being produced by LED.
Conclusion:
LED are created and designed to emit light. LED has been considered as eco-friendly, energy efficient, long life substitute to traditional lighting. As a result, it uses lower energy compared to incandescent lightings. Besides, it comes with various advantages. So when looking for an easier and better way of reducing electricity bill, then LED is your best solution.
APC UPS
There is no battery that last forever. The battery life can be maximized by operating your UPS under the recommended conditions.
The life of APC UPS is dependent pm
- UPS Placement: When installing a UPS in a controlled environment and within specified confines and not near open areas or window that contains high levels of dust, moisture or corrosive fumes. Keep the ventilation opening free.
- Ambient Temperature: use the rated capacity of UPS battery, the condition that maximizes its life in optimal performance and is based on ambient temperature of 77 degree Farenheight. Every 10 degree Celsius above ideal temperature will reduce the battery life by 50%
- Maintenance: APC UPS do not need replacement fluids but they do require periodic maintenance. The battery should be visually inspected for cleanliness and remove any dirt, dust or debris. Leaking batteries or batteries with excessive swelling should be disposed properly or replaced.
- Cycling Frequency: During installation, the battery is 100% rated. However, each discharge cycle decreases its relative capacity. Comprehending cycling frequency allows noticing of frequent or abnormal cycling so you can predict its life better. Many UPS are adjustable so nuisance trips that can consume the battery capacity unnecessarily.
- Battery Storage: To avoid or reduce downtime APC UPS owners may purchase replacement batteries before they are needed. Ensure to charge stored batteries every 6 months lest you suffer permanent loss of capacity within 1.5 to 2.5 years.
