History of Ubiquiti

Ubiquiti started as an American company in 2003 and has grown into a globally recognised brand. Ubiquiti serves customers through a network of approximately 100 distributors and online retailers worldwide. The company’s product portfolio originally began with the utilisation of existing commercial Wi-Fi chipset technology to wirelessly deliver Internet to underserved areas. Since then Ubiquiti has successfully broadened their product portfolio to include product lines such as Wi-Fi access points, security cameras and traditional networking equipment.

Advantages of using Ubiquiti in Kenya

The Ubiquiti product portfolio consists of a variety of categories such as airFibre, airMAX, EdgeMAX and UniFi. Each category with its unique benefits.

airFiber is Ubiquiti Networks’ own proprietary custom silicon and implements the most efficient use of licensed and unlicensed-band spectrum – a vital attribute in increasingly crowded RF environments.  Featuring a unique dual-antenna design and proprietary self-interference cancellation algorithms, airFiber solutions extract more usable channels out of the available spectrum than any other radio system. airFiber’s built-in configuration tool guides the selection of RF channel bandwidths, transmit power, and other parameters to minimise potential interference and optimise link budgets.

Our Product ranges from;

Ubiquiti airMAX thrives in a point-to-multipoint network, with three or more locations. A typical airMAX network will consist of one outdoor Base Station (or Access Point) and multiple CPE devices connected to the Access Point.  The performance depends on both sides of the link, so if the goal is long-distance, it is imperative to choose the right base station and the right CPE for each case.   Ubiquiti’s solutions offer improved latency, noise immunity, and scalability and support the high data rates and dense modulation delivered by airMAX AC technology.  This way of wireless communication deliver benefits such as high-speed connectivity over long distances, fast to deploy, and considering the harsh South African environment, is the best solution for last-mile deployments.

Ubiquiti’s EdgeMAX is designed to deliver robust world-class indoor and outdoor wired networking solutions. Powered by the feature-rich EdgeOS firmware with a next-generation graphical user interface. Housed in a compact, fanless form factor the EdgeRouter range operates quietly as it delivers the powerful routing, security, and management features required to efficiently run your network.  Perfect for fibre deployments and management for fibre integrators and companies targeting housing developments.

UniFi is Ubiquiti’s all-in-one, enterprise Wi-Fi portfolio and is supported by a fully integrated software-defined network (SDN) platform for all UniFi Wi-Fi, surveillance and networking devices. The unique features of each UniFi device provide you with the freedom to deliver the ideal solution for your application, whether it be large-scale enterprise Wi-Fi deployments or home Wi-Fi deployments.

Ubiquiti FAQ’s

Can Ubiquiti Networks connect to other products from other networking brands?

Yes, you can connect any IP based product to your Ubiquiti network, including range of IP cameras from Hikvision, Dahua and  Uniview and IP-based access control and time and attendance solutions from ZKTeco.

What is airPRISM?

airPRISM technology isolates the signal within the operating channel to increase throughput and improve latency.

Does airMAX support connections with standard Wi-Fi?

Ubiquiti’s AC series devices do not connect with non-airMAX devices. The M-series devices in station mode can connect to standard access points. However, in access point mode with the airMAX protocol disabled, these units will broadcast a signal that standard devices can connect to.

What are the benefits of starting a WISP with airMAX LTU?

Ubiquiti’s LTU range is perfect for high-density areas, using frequency split, which means the TX and RX signal move independently from each other, avoiding interference. It also operates on a wider spectrum between 10 MHz and 50MHz, reaching more CPEs.

By default, airFiber 11GHz operate on SISO mode. By adding low-band duplexer MIMO mode is activated allowing you to MIMO mode, double your throughput capacity.

Is Ubiquiti’s airFiber 11GHz expensive as a backhaul solution?

Ubiquiti’s 11GHz licensed link is one of the most cost-effective solutions in Southern Africa.

Does all the UniFi AC APs support seamless roaming & band steering?

Yes – All Gen 2 devices support seamless roaming, and all AC APs support band steering.

Does Ubiquiti have a Mesh-solution?

Ubiquiti has multiple UniFi access points in their portfolio that can be used as a mesh solution.  There are numerous access point units with versatile mounting options, such as the UniFi FLEX, and there are outdoor APs like the UAP-AC-M and UAP-AC-M-PRO. Ubiquiti also has an AmpliFi range that is perfect for a home solution that requires high capacity.

Does UBNT cater for fibre infrastructure and deployments?

Yes, Ubiquiti’s EdgeMAX range consists of powerful switches and routers, plus various ONU options, with some modules featuring built-in Wi-Fi, eliminating the need for a separate Wi-Fi router. This works best for mass fibre deployment, reducing costs and time. Once installed, you can monitor and manage your network from one centralised management platform at no additional cost.

What LTU models support Station mode?

Can Ubiquiti gear manage a large deployment in an office environment?

Yes. The Ubiquiti UniFi Wi-Fi system allows users to build a centrally managed Wi-Fi network across multiple access points using the software-based UniFi management controller.

Why do I need an UniFi Cloudkey?

A Cloud Key is an onsite solution for when you do not wish to run a dedicated Windows or Linux machine for network monitoring and management. It resembles a tiny computer that runs the UniFi controller locally. You simply plug it into a port on a switch and the need to run a separate computer 24/7 is eliminated.  Versions of the Cloudkey, most popular is the Gen 2 range and the Plus, these versions can also assist with surveillance monitoring.
